LONDON • India’s Sania Mirza admitted she had played through the pain barrier to reach the Wimbledon second round with a 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-4 win over Catalina Castano of Colombia yesterday. Mirza, the 32nd seed, had only returned to action two weeks ago after missing the last three months following surgery on a right wrist injury. So she feared the worst when she twice needed treatment for a back problem. But the 21-year-old refused to give in to the pain and plays Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez next knowing a win would give take her to the third round for the first time. “It’s always good to get through matches like that, even when you’re not playing your best and you’re coming back from an injury,” she said. “Actually I think this was the first time that I actually felt nervous again to go out. I didn’t really sleep well last night, to be honest. But I think that happens when you’re coming back from injury.” Mirza is still suffering some pain in her wrist after the surgery but she believes she is ahead of schedule in her comeback. “My wrist, I can’t say that it’s perfect. In terms of medically, yes, it’s fine now. But I think whereas pain is concerned, I still have pain when I hit a late forehand,” she said.
